Peace and Happiness

This is my first attempt at rune binding. A good friend of mine, Adam, is starting a new life so I made him a bind rune for peace and happiness. Hope you like the artwork at least as much as it pleased me making it.

A bind rune is a ligature of two or more runes. They are extremely rare in Viking Age inscriptions, but are common in pre-Viking Age (Proto-Norse) and in post-Viking Age (medieval) inscriptions.
There are two types of bind runes.

  • Normal bind runes are formed of two (or rarely three) adjacent runes which are joined together to form a single conjoined glyph, usually sharing a common vertical stroke. I used this type.

  • Another type of bind rune called a same-stave rune, formed by several runic letters written sequentially along a long common stemline. The long bind rune stemline may be incorporated into an image on the rune stone, for example as a ship's mast on runestones. I'll use this when I'll build my own boat :D

  • For this project I used 3 elder futark runes:

Wunjo (Joy) Letter: W Satisfaction; Happiness, general success and recognition of worth.

Berkana (Birch) Letter: B Renewal; Healing, recovery, physical or spiritual regeneration, a new growth from old roots.

Kenaz (Tourch) Letter: K Guidance; Creativity, and the strengthening of abilities in all realms.

    Items needed:

    • drill bit without a drilling machine

    • a small, hollow twig

    • sandpaper

    • pyrography tool kit

    • How to make it:

      1. Find a twig with a soft interior.

      2. Cut a 4-5 cm piece from the branch and scoop out the soft interior.

      3. Engrave it.

      4. And voila! To make the wood stay in place on the string it is best to twist the string a bit and then the pull it through the pendant.
